Why did the band members decline to participate? I certainly asked them to participate, but I never really expected them to based on who they are and past history.
So I thought this would be the story told by other people. There are dozens and dozens of interviews with eyewitnesses: People who made the records, who opened for them. Close friends of theirs. Former managers. I had interviewed Gord Downie extensively before, and I had an interview with Gord Sinclair from a long time ago. But there are a lot of quotes from the band members, so a lot of the story is told in their own words through a synthesis of existing historical information.

To me, it just makes the Tragically Hip much more important because that is where Gord made his most resonant work. You can debate which records are better than others, but the commercial fact is he made his most resonant work with the Tragically Hip.
