I am being faithful not to the style of the house but to the Burgundy style and its history. So now, even in more difficult vintages, the wine will still offer a more silky quality of tannins than before. Otherwise I remain loyal to everything that I like about his approach: elegance versus power, and very natural, pure wines versus ones that are loaded with oak and perfume.

This title automatically conferred on him the duties of administrator of the seigneuries belonging to the Sulpicians, titular priest of the parish of Montreal, and vicar general of the bishop of Quebec for the District of Montreal; he gave up this last office in No superior ever held office under such difficult circumstances. After the ratification of the transfer of Canada by France to Great Britain, Montgolfier decided to go to Europe, initially to see his superior general in France, and then to meet with the British government in London.

In this way the Sulpicians were to avoid being despoiled by the new colonial government. On the occasion of the trip which he undertook in OctoberMontgolfier had also been entrusted by the chapter of Quebec with the task of working for the appointment of a new bishop in North America. Putting forward the ancient right by which they were to elect a new bishop when the see was vacant, the canons had made the customary arrangements on the preceding 15 September: a mass of the Holy Spirit, a swearing-in of electors, and an election.

They had confided to the Sulpician superior the name of the person whom they wanted for bishop — Montgolfier himself. The election was deemed null and void by the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda, because from the time the provisions of the Council of Trent —63 had come into force the choice of bishops had rested with the pope, even though his choice might be made from among candidates put forward by other bishops or even, as in the present circumstances, by the canons.

However, before the date set for his consecration, JuneMontgolfier learned that the governor general of Canada, Murraypreferred Canon Briand. The Sulpician did not insist; he returned to Canada and gave his resignation as bishop elect to the chapter of Quebec. Later Montgolfier took part in an attempt to set up a bishopric in Montreal. The population of Montreal was growing rapidly, however, and the need for a bishop was being felt.

He felt that he was too old and he preferred to continue directing his efforts to having French Sulpicians come to Montreal. In the early s he had several solo exhibitions at Durlacher Bros, in New York, of his meticulous botanical watercolours. He then changed direction, becoming an abstract painter initially working in acrylic on glass and acrylic sheet, then making sculptures, some being mass-produced, which were shown at Richard Demarco Gallery, Edinburgh, in Two years later a trip to India revived his interest in botanical illustration.

He had a show at Nihonbashi Gallery, Tokyo, in ; Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, showed his botanical pictures in ; and in —90 he was included in Scottish Art since at Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, which holds abstract work by him.
