Afua Cooper is a Jamaican-Canadian multidisciplinary scholar, author, and artist. Her indomitable research on slavery, and Black history has made her one of the leading figures in Black Canadian studies, and the authority on Canadian slavery.

She has curated and co-curated nine exhibits on Black history and culture. Afua Cooper has put Black Studies on the map. This Black Studies minor is the first of its kind in Canada.

She founded and co-ordinated the Black Studies program at Dalhousie University. InDr. Cooper received over one-million dollar in funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage to research Black Canadian history across time and space. She is the acknowledged authority on Black Canadian history and a leading expert in Black Canadian studies.
